Cleaning Toilets

This blog post covers best practice for cleaning toilets.


Important: Always use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when undertaking any cleaning task and follow the manufacturer’s product use and where relevant dilution guidance.

Daily Programme

  • ¬†Apply an appropriate undiluted toilet cleaning product to the toilet bowl and agitate with a brush to remove stains.
  • Apply the undiluted toilet cleaning product to the area under the rim and agitate with a brush to clean the area thoroughly.
  • Flush the toilet.
  • Select an appropriate anti-bactericidal washroom cleaner and wipe down all the hard surfaces outside the bowl, paying close attention to the high touch areas like the toilet seat and flush handle or button.

Weekly programme for removing limescale from the toilet.

  • Using a toilet brush, plunge into the toilet bowl to reveal the water line and limescale build-up.
  • Select an appropriate toilet descaling product and dilute it according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Apply the descaler to the toilet bowl.
  • Using a toilet brush and/or scourer pad agitate the limescale thoroughly until all traces are removed.
  • Flush the toilet to remove all traces of the descaler.
  • Clean the toilet brush and discard any scourer pads used.
